South Rushden Pumas v South Rushden Panthers –
06.02.10
After an enforced lay-off due to weather and
Santa, the Pumas finally had a chance to get 2010 up and running, after
a false start in their last match.
The Pumas had adopted a new strategy of warming up
properly before matches, after the coach had noticed a lack of
concentration was costing them goals early in games…. And today was a
big game – local derby with SRJFC Panthers!
The game kicked off and was soon into a furious
pace, with the Pumas surprising the Panthers with their strength and
commitment. Both teams were trying to pass the ball about, and create
opportunities to score.
The Pumas continued to pressure their opponents,
and a good passing move was almost finished off by Brett. The Panthers
started to find their rhythm, and had a succession of corners as the
game reached the end of the first half. The last corner was well
delivered and required a goal line clearance from a Puma… The Panthers
would consider themselves unlucky not to have scored!
Half time came and went, and still the game did
not slow down. Savvi had taken over in goal for the Pumas, but was not
required to do much early on as he was well protected by the ever
reliable Callum and the impressive Dylan.
Further up the pitch Brett was having his best
game so far for the Pumas, and was linking up well with Josh and
Harrison. After a close shot from Brett, the Panther responded with a
good effort on goal – the game was becoming stretched, surely a goal
would come??
Harrison continued to grow into the game and
showed some great skill and a clever shot – hopefully a sign of things
to come! Dylan kept the defence tight with some strong tackling, but the
Panthers were coming again. In the last few minutes the Panthers had the
better chances, with Savvi making two world class saves!
There was just time for the Panthers to fizz the
ball across the Pumas goal one more time, but no-one was there to take
advantage. The referee blew the full time whistle, and everyone tried to
get their breath back!
A fantastic match, strongly competed by two good
teams showing great sportsmanship, a credit to South Rushden Junior
Football Club. Surely it cannot be long before the Pumas pick up a
victory?? Every player is stronger and more committed with every week,
and they are all really enjoying their football. Perhaps 2010 will be
the year of the Puma….
