15/11/2009. League Cup, 2nd Round. South Rushden Rebels v Corby
Hellenic Fisher.
‘We’re in the hat’
The Rebels moved into the next round of the cup with a close fought win.
The boys continued their recent good form but this week were rewarded
with a win. On a very sticky pitch they played some good football a
defended well once the ‘clash’ of colours was sorted.
The squad was:
Ali,
Greeny, Sam, Matt, Aidan,
Harry, Reece, Will,
Scott, Ed, Lakey.
Subs: Derek, Bolts and Oli.
The boys pushed forward from the kick off, the 1st 6 minutes of the game
being played in the Hellenic half. Their keeper making his 1st saves of
the game. On 7 minutes totally against the run of play we were 1-0
behind. A long ball together with a Hellenic player wearing a black bib
caused confusion in our defence. A shot from just inside of the area
ended up in the back of our net despite a good effort from Ali.
We continued to push forward, Lakey, Scott, Ed, Harry and Reece all
causing problems for their defence. On 11 minutes we were level. Further
good work down our right allowed Ed to cross into the 6-yard box and
Lakey finished into the roof of their net. For the rest of the half we
continued to push forward as Reece began to dominate the midfield. Their
keeper making further good saves from Scott and Lakey. Even though we
created a number of chances we could not find a second goal the display
deserved.
Half Time: Rebels 1-1 Hellenic Fisher.
Hellenic started the 2nd half much stronger and controlled the 1st 10
minutes of the half, but our defence stood firm and Ali cleared well
from the edge of his box. The boys gradually worked their way back into
the game with some good football. Oli looked liked he had put us
in front following a good pass from Ed but the goal was ruled offside.
With 8 minutes remaining Ed scored our winner. Reece again won the ball
in midfield and after beating 1 player played the pass of the match
through their defence into Ed’s path. Ed still had work to do but
finished calmly past the advancing keeper to put us into the next round.
Full Time: Rebels 2-1 Hellenic Fisher.
A good performance on a difficult pitch. All the boys played their part
as we made several substitutions to replace tied legs. The result was
certainly what the boys deserved following their recent performances. We
look forward to the draw for the next round.
