South Rushden Rhinos V Volta F.C (31/10/09)

SQUAD:
Michael Childs, Liam Pilcher, William Turner, Scott Simms, Connor Love, Logan Fisher, Harry Stoner, Harry Richardson, Lewis Groves.

A repeat fixture from the previous weekend unfortunately didn’t bring a repeat result and it was Volta’s turn to claim the victory in another closely fought match between the two teams. Connor and Harry Richardson made their goalkeeping debuts and both performed well in a position unfamiliar to them.

After going behind the Rhinos clicked into gear and the chances started to come, a neat through ball put Harry Stoner through on goal, and as he has done so on numerous occasions this season he made no mistake calmly stroking home to send the Rhinos into the half time interval on level terms. The second half was a one sided affair with the Rhinos carving out chance after chance but somehow unable to find the net. Midway through the half Volta were awarded a free kick from what seemed like a non threatening position and as the Rhinos organised their defence a well struck and curling shot found the far corner and Volta were back in the driving seat with what turned out to be their only chance of the half. For a minute the Rhinos were shell shocked but were soon back on the offensive and were camped in Volta’s half for the remainder of the match but as chances came and went it was obvious it was just going to be ‘One of those days’.

With the full time whistle seconds away the endless pressure looked to of paid off and the Rhinos were handed a lifeline when the referee pointed to the penalty spot after a hand ball but the Rhinos luck was summed up when the well struck penalty flew inches wide of the upright followed immediately by the full time whistle.
Once again all of the boys should be proud of themselves for their battling display with the ‘Man of The Match’ award going to Scott for his Wing Wizard performance.

As the lads left the pitch they must have been wandering what more they could of done to get a result but to be honest they couldn’t of done anymore and sometimes that’s just the way football goes……..
